Welcome to the DINA project WIKI
The DINA project is a collaborative effort involving institutions hosting major natural history collections in Sweden, Denmark and Estonia.
The overall aim is to develop an information system allowing the participating institutions, amateur naturalists, and others to effectively manage their collections and share the associated information with national and international partners. The information system is being developed together with international partners and it is based on Open-Source components.

About the DINA Project
General information about the DINA project is provided in the attachments below, including the DINA project description for the proposal submitted to the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative in June 2010, and a presentation on DINA and IRIS given by Fredrik Ronquist to the SAMSA group [Arbetsgruppen för samlingar] at the SAMSA meeting on September 15, 2010. The DINA project was awarded 5.3 M SEK for the period 2011-2013 by the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative in November 2010.
The project is governed by National Steering Groups and the DINA International Council with up to three representatives from each participating country. More information may be found under
DinaSweden,
DinaDenmark,
DinaEstonia, and
DinaInternationalCouncil.
Originally, DINA was a National Swedish project which started in 2007. The project has now been extended to neighbouring countries. From 2011, the DINA project is entering the implementation stage. Some information prepared during the earlier
DinaPhaseOne is available. The current DINA implementation decisions are based on the DINA-IRIS report (see attachments below), which was presented by
TorstenEriksson on November 8, 2010.
DINA Implementation
The DINA implementation will be based on the following decisions made by the steering committee on November 24, 2010, in Gothenburg:
- The system will use the Specify data structure, with additions and modifications when required to accommodate current and future needs of the partner institutions.
- The current 'thick' Specify client (v. 6.0) will be introduced initially in the museum units that do not already have sophisticated systems in place, with appropriate security measures when used over the Web.
- The project will seek to formalize a software development collaboration based on the interest shown by the Specify group, Morphbank group, Harvard University Herbaria, Collection Space project, and Nordic-Baltic partners. Full partners will be expected to contribute significant development resources to the project. Other institutions and individuals will be offered to participate as observers, without influence over project decisions or access to project resources other than the source code.
- The goal is to develop a system based on Web clients and a service-oriented architecture, and that spans over multiple institutions.
- The system will include a common Web presentation of the information for outside users.
